AALBORG THEATRE
Bachelor project // Group Project // 2016 // Denmark // Aalborg
Aalborg new theatre is placed on the area of the previous Aalborg Akvavit distillery, on the edge overlooking the Limfjord and therefore extend the harbour front. The theatre has a cylindrical appearance, which creates a reference to the old silos nearby while round form ensure that it can be approached from all sides, without encountering a backside. Furthermore, the theatre is built up by a transparent glass facade with a orthogonal and heavy concrete construction inside. This combination allows the building to change appearance during the day, where it radiate calm and transparent, while during the night it will look complex and dynamic with highlighted stages, seen from Nørresundby. The building has an orientation towards the fjord, by a cut through the cylinder and a sunscreen, which is designed after the suns path on the sky. The screen is smallest towards the north and the fjord, and therefore create transparency and a welcoming sense. The materially is a combination of maritime and industrial types, which both can be found around the specific site. Functional materials such as glass, corten steel and rough concrete has been used as a reference to the industrial part of the site, while timber have been added to underline a cosy hospitality since it is an public building for entertainment. The combination of the form and materials composition have created an icon expression and a building worth remembering.
