NEXT GIANT LEAP

Master Thesis // Group Project // 2018 // Mars // Victoria crater

Next Giant Leap is a Master thesis based upon creating the first martian settlement. The project is located a the periphery of a metorite crater and is based upon contemporary 3D print technologies, with the latest knowledge and information gathered from operational rovers on Mars. The settlement is covered by a structural tension membrane, designed to facilitate an artificial biosphere on the inside which sustain the curcumstances for life
On the inside of the membrane a small community for approximate 200 people is designed with housing complexes, thermal baths, outside kitchens, and a cultural center with an amphitheater, sports facilities and a chapel inside. Every building are built by milling out plateaus to utilize the ground as much as possible. Afterwards the excessive soil is used for the construction - 3D printed as Martian concrete, on top of these plateaus.
This creates a visual poetic encounter between vernacular inspired earthwork and visionary use of 3D printing. A joint unifying and emphasizing the local materials and their different tactility. This way of using the local available resources, building with visionary technologies and implimenting earthly sensations into the settlement, lays the foundation for this master thesis projects proposal for a Martian typology.
